Dubai's best-known sights sit on one metro line from the airport. Dubai Mall is a link bridge from Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station, so a 5-hour layover leaves about an hour for it, and Dubai Frame opens at 8am, two stops earlier. With 6.5 hours you can reach old Dubai and cross the Creek by abra for AED 1.
How much of Dubai can you see on a layover?
If your passport lets you leave Dubai airport, 5 hours gives about an hour in town, enough for Dubai Mall. With 5.5 hours, see Dubai Frame (8am to 9pm, AED 50) or the Dubai Fountain, every 30 minutes from 6pm. With 6 hours, go up Burj Khalifa on At the Top (AED 189) or take children to the Dubai Aquarium; with 6.5, Al Shindagha Museum, an abra across the Creek and the Gold Souk; with 7, Ski Dubai. Landing at night? Sleep airside, then Dubai Frame at 8am and At the Top at 10am.
Every plan below starts and ends at Dubai International Airport (DXB), with about an hour to get out, the metro ride in, and being back 90 minutes before departure. First make sure you can leave the airport: visa and transit rules. The Museum of the Future is closed until early 2027 and the Dubai Museum for renovation, so no plan uses them. Visit Dubai publishes some walking times, such as 15 minutes from the station to the fountain; where nobody does, as from max station to Dubai Frame, the walks below are this guide’s allowances.
5 to 6 hours: Dubai Mall, Dubai Frame and the fountain
With 5 hours you have about an hour in town, and with 6 about 2.
Dubai Mall by the metro link bridge
The quickest plan, for a short layover or a first look at Downtown.
- Clear immigration and follow the signs for the metro (Red Line, Airport Terminal 1 or 3).
- Ride towards Expo 2020 or Life Pharmacy to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall, 24 minutes from Terminal 1.
- Take the temperature-controlled Metro Link Bridge into Dubai Mall, about 15 minutes’ walk.
- Head back to the station and board a train towards Centrepoint.
Opening hours. The shops open 10am to 11pm Monday to Thursday and 10am to midnight Friday to Sunday. Restaurants and food courts stay open to midnight, and to 1am Friday to Sunday.
Bags. Nothing is stored at the station, so leave large bags at the airport’s left luggage.
Dubai Frame from max station
A landmark in Zabeel Park and the earliest-opening sight here, for budget travellers and families.
- Ride the Red Line to max, 16 minutes from Terminal 1. Dubai Frame’s own site still calls it Al Jafiliya, its name until 2021.
- Walk to Dubai Frame at gate 4 of Zabeel Park, about 25 minutes by this guide’s allowance: Dubai Municipality says only that it’s “followed by a walk”.
- Allow about 45 minutes, then walk back to max.
Opening hours. Dubai Frame opens 8am to 9pm every day, including holidays, though its timing may vary in Ramadan. Adults pay AED 50 and children 3 to 12 AED 20; under 3s go free.
Bags. Large bags and strollers stay at the gate 4 counter.
Dubai Mall and the Dubai Fountain at night
A free show after dark, for anyone landing in the afternoon.
- Ride the metro to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall, 24 minutes from Terminal 1.
- Walk through Dubai Mall towards the lake: Visit Dubai puts it at 15 minutes.
- Watch the Dubai Fountain at the foot of Burj Khalifa: shows run every 30 minutes from 6pm to 11pm.
- Walk back to the station. The last train leaves at 11:31pm Monday to Thursday and Saturday, 12:31am after Friday and 11:30pm on Sunday.
Pick your day. There are afternoon shows too: 1pm and 1:30pm Saturday to Thursday, 2pm and 2:30pm on Fridays. The boardwalk on the lake costs AED 25, says Visit Dubai.
6 to 7.5 hours: Burj Khalifa, the aquarium, old Dubai and snow
With 6 hours you have about 2 hours in town, and with 7.5 about 3.5.
At the Top, Burj Khalifa
The view from Burj Khalifa, for 6 hours or more.
- Ride the metro to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall.
- Walk through Dubai Mall to the At the Top entrance on the lower ground floor, about 15 minutes.
- Go up to levels 124 and 125. The operator says a visit takes about 1.5 hours.
- Walk back to the station.
Opening hours. At the Top opens 10am to 9pm, last entry 8:15pm. The Silver ticket was AED 189 (seen November 2026); the SKY ticket, which adds level 148, AED 399, with last entry at 7pm. Children under 3 go free.
Bags. Handbags are allowed; backpacks, shopping bags and strollers go to the luggage room, and laptops and tablets are on the operator’s list of banned items.
Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo
A walk-through tunnel and penguins upstairs, all indoors: a plan for children.
- Ride the metro to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall and walk into the mall, about 15 minutes.
- Walk through the Aquarium Tunnel on the ground floor, which the aquarium says takes 15 to 30 minutes.
- Go up to the Underwater Zoo and Penguin Cove on Level 2, 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.
- Walk back to the station.
Opening hours. 11am to 9pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 9pm Saturday and Sunday, last entry 8:15pm, every day of the year. The Silver ticket, with the tunnel, the zoo and Penguin Cove, was AED 199 (seen November 2026).
With children. Children 5 and under ride the metro free. The aquarium publishes no child price on its ticket page.
Al Shindagha, the abra and the souks
Old Dubai on both banks of the Creek, for 6.5 hours or more, and the cheapest plan: AED 15 for the museum, AED 1 for the abra and the metro.
- Take the Red Line to Union, change to the Green Line and ride to Al Ghubaiba, about 45 minutes with the waits.
- Cross to Al Shindagha Museum, opposite the station, for the story of the Creek, about 50 minutes.
- Walk about 10 minutes to Bur Dubai abra station and cross Dubai Creek by abra to Deira Old Souq, about 5 minutes, AED 1 cash.
- Walk through the Spice Souk near the abra station and on to the Gold Souk, three minutes away, then five minutes to Gold Souq station for the Green Line to Union.
Opening hours. Al Shindagha Museum opens 10am to 8pm, last entry 7pm: adults AED 15, students AED 5, children free. The abra runs 6am to midnight, and most Gold Souk shops open 10am to 10pm, says Visit Dubai.
Pick your day. On Fridays RTA pauses the abras for prayers from 1pm to 2pm.
Late return. The last Green Line train from Gold Souq leaves at 11:42pm Monday to Thursday, 12:42am after Friday, 11:41pm Saturday and 11:40pm Sunday. The change at Union leaves 4 to 6 minutes.
Al Fahidi. The restored Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood is in Bur Dubai, on the same bank as the museum, but no official hours are published for it, so it isn’t a timed stop. The Dubai Museum in Al Fahidi Fort is closed for renovation.
Ski Dubai at Mall of the Emirates
Snow in the desert, for families with 7 hours or more.
- Ride the Red Line to Mall of the Emirates, 38 minutes from Terminal 1.
- Take the enclosed walkway into the mall to Ski Dubai.
- Play in the snow park, with clothing, gloves and equipment included in the pass; allow about 2 hours.
- Walk back to the station.
Opening hours. 10am to 11pm Monday to Thursday (last ticket 9:30pm), 10am to midnight on Friday (last ticket 10:30pm) and 9am to midnight Saturday and Sunday (last ticket 10:30pm).
With children. The Snow Base pass was AED 190 a person, from age 2 (seen November 2026). Children 2 to 14 must be with an adult who holds a ticket.
Late return. The last train back leaves Mall of the Emirates at 11:17pm, and 12:17am after Friday.
Private layover tours with pickup
Neither Emirates nor Dubai Airports runs a transit tour, but several companies sell private tours that start and end at the airport. A driver-guide meets you at arrivals, shows you the city and drives you back for your flight, which takes the timing off your hands.
- What’s on offer: GetYourGuide sells a 3-hour private transit tour from the airport (opens in a new tab), which stops at Burj Khalifa and drives past Sheikh Zayed Road, Burj Al Arab, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Marina and JBR, and a private layover tour of 3 to 8 hours (opens in a new tab) with the souks or Burj Khalifa. Viator’s private layover tour with airport transfers (opens in a new tab) runs 2 to 10 hours, from about US$80 (seen November 2026), and it has a whole layover tours category (opens in a new tab).
- Layover needed: add 2.5 hours to the tour’s length, an hour to get out of the airport and 90 minutes to be back before your flight. A 3-hour tour needs a layover of about 5.5 hours, and a 5-hour tour about 7.5.
- Check before booking: whether the price is per person or for the car, whether a Burj Khalifa ticket is included, the start times on offer, and what happens if your flight lands late.
Overnight: sleep airside, then Dubai Frame and Burj Khalifa
Sleep airside, then Dubai Frame and Burj Khalifa
For night arrivals: rest at the airport, then two sights as they open.
- Sleep airside at the DXB Hotel or a Sleepover cabin, without passing immigration: see rest at the airport below.
- Ride from Terminal 1 to max, 16 minutes. The first Red Line train is at 5:07am, and 8:05am on Sundays.
- Walk to Dubai Frame for its 8am opening, about 25 minutes, and spend about 45 minutes there.
- Ride three stops to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall and walk through Dubai Mall to At the Top, which opens at 10am. Allow about 1.5 hours.
That plan leaves town about noon, so your flight can leave from about 2:10pm. On a Sunday the first train leaves at 8:05am, so the Frame comes after 9am and your flight can leave from about 2:40pm.
24 hours: stay over
A full day gives time for three plans: Dubai Frame at 8am, At the Top at 10am, old Dubai and the abra in the afternoon, and the Dubai Fountain after dark, with a rest between. Beyond 24 hours, enter the UAE and book a city hotel: the visa and transit page covers the visas. On Emirates, check whether your connection qualifies for Dubai Connect first.
Rest at the airport
The DXB Hotel and Sleepover are airside, so you can use them on any passport; Premier Inn is landside. At the airport covers lounges, showers and prices.
The DXB Hotel, Terminal 3
Dubai International Hotel is above the duty free in Terminal 3, with entrances by gates A1 and A24, B14 and B22, and C13. It’s for transit passengers leaving from Terminal 3; from Terminals 1 and 2, take the free airport shuttle. It books by the hour with no fixed check-in time: AED 403 plus AED 62.46 taxes and fees for up to 3 hours in a Deluxe room (seen November 2026), and stays end at 24 hours. Guests use its pool, gym and showers in Concourse B free.
Sleepover cabins and pods
Four Sleepover sites are open 24 hours, for transit passengers only, with pods and single, double and bunk cabins. The cheapest is at Terminal 3’s B gates, between B14 and B18, from about US$29 a person, for departures from Terminals 2 and 3. Terminal 3’s A and C sites start from about US$65, and Terminal 1’s, opposite gates D6 and D7, from about US$50 (seen November 2026). Sleepover says Terminals 1 and 3 aren’t easily reached from each other, so book the one for your departure terminal. Showers at the B and D sites cost extra.
Premier Inn Dubai International Airport
A landside hotel in Al Garhoud, 3.5 km from the airport, with a free shuttle to and from Terminals 1 and 3 round the clock. You pass immigration to get there, so it suits passports that get a visa on arrival. Check-in is from 2pm, and the hotel offers a 24-hour stay option.
Tips that make a Dubai layover easier
- Sunday starts late. The first metro from Terminal 1 is at 8:05am on Sundays.
- Check the last train. It’s 11:31pm from Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall most nights, 12:31am after Friday and 11:30pm on Sunday.
- Carry cash for the abra. It’s AED 1, cash only.
- Dress for the old town. Visit Dubai asks visitors to cover shoulders and knees in heritage areas, and says swimwear isn’t appropriate in malls.
- Watch holidays. National Day falls on 2 and 3 December. In 2026 RTA ran the metro to 1am over each holiday; check RTA first.
